What to Look For in High-Visibility Gear

by Katerina Grigorenko on January 21, 2023

It's the time of year when everyone is starting to bundle up and step outside. As a result, you may be feeling a little more conscious about staying visible while you're working or commuting. The good news is that there are plenty of options available for high-visibility gear that can help keep you safe—and they don't even have to break the bank!

Reflective tape and materials

When visibility is low, there are two main ways you can increase your chance of being seen by other drivers:

  • Make sure your clothes are bright and reflective. Most hi vis hoodies contains some type of reflective material such as silver or yellow stripes or dots. In addition to making the wearer easily visible from a distance, these types of materials reflect light back into the eyes of drivers, making them more noticeable even in daylight conditions.
  • Use lights that flash brightly when cars approach and move away from you (flashing lights are required in many countries). This is especially useful for people who work at night because most traffic accidents occur during this time period due to reduced visibility due to darkness, rain, or foggy weather conditions

What to Look For in High-Visibility Gear

Brightness

This is the most important factor when purchasing hi vis jacket. You want something that's going to be as bright as possible so you can be seen by motorists and other road users. The measure of product's brightness is measured in lumens, which are a unit of measurement for how much light a product can reflect. The higher the number of lumens, the brighter your clothing will be.

High visibility clothing has two different types of material: retroreflective or reflective. Retroreflective material uses embedded beads on its surface, which then bounce light back toward its source at every angle and direction they are pointed at (this is why if you looked at yourself wearing retroreflective material in a mirror, it would appear white). Reflective material simply reflects light off itself when hit by another light source (this is why if you look at yourself wearing reflective materials in a mirror, all you see is yourself). High visibility vests have both retroreflective and reflective material woven into them so that from any direction there will always be some sort of reflection coming off them

Comfortability

The second most important consideration, after visibility, is comfortability. The longer you’re going to be wearing your hi vis gear, the more important it becomes that it fits properly and doesn’t restrict movement. Make sure that all of the seams are reinforced so they don’t split open when you bend over or stretch your arms above your head.

If there are areas where you expect a lot of movement (like around shoulders or at crotch level), look for double-stitched seams or extra padding in those areas so they won't chafe or rub against bare skin. It's also worth checking out whether any zippers or buttons have been replaced with velcro; velcro closure is much more comfortable for regular use than metal clasps because it doesn't scratch against clothing as much.

Durability

Durability is the most important factor when buying a piece of high-visibility gear. You want your clothing to last as long as possible, but you also want it to be comfortable and breathable so you can wear it all day long. The best way to test if something is durable is to test its durability. This can be done by throwing a ball at a person wearing the item in question, or running into them with your car while they're wearing whatever it may be. If they break after one throw of the ball or crash into them with your car, then that item is not very durable and should not be purchased by anyone looking for something durable.

If an item has passed this test (and survived), then there are other ways you can improve its durability: try washing it more often; use less detergent when cleaning; iron less frequently; avoid placing items near open flames (don't leave them lying around on top of hot stoves).

High-Visibility Gear

High Visibility Gear Is An Important Safety Precaution To Take At Work

High visibility gear is an important safety precaution to take at work. While it's not the only way to stay safe, it is one of the most effective tools you can use. However, hi vis work trousers should never be used as a substitute for proper training and discipline. Always follow all safety instructions from your supervisor when operating machinery or equipment at your workplace!

Hopefully, we’ve helped you learn more about the different types of high-visibility gear and how to choose the right one for your needs. Remember: It’s not just about being visible! You want to find something that’s comfortable, durable, and easy to use at work too.
